What is VSR?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

VSR, or Virtual Show Room, is Arithmer\u2019s in-house take on virtual reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arithmer aims to elevate traditional virtual reality to allow a higher level of immersion combined with user customizability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How is VSR different from VR?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rather than creating a simulated 3D environment based solely on computer-generated assets, Arithmer\u2019s VSR involves inserting real-world images in the form of pre-recorded videos and\/or live streams into a virtual 3D space. The VSR user effectively enters into a \u201cvirtual showroom\u201d of a real location, with the ability to look around as if they are actually present in the shown location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What functionalities are available in VSR?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Depending on the equipment available and level of immersion desired, Arithmer offers 3 different approaches with core functionality differences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Virtual Reality Kit with headset and controllers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The first approach is more akin to the traditional idea of virtual reality, using VR goggles strapped to the head and handheld controllers for interaction and navigation. The main difference, howevers, lies in the customizability of the virtual space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Navigation spots<\/strong> can be placed, which when interacted with, allows the user to \u201cjump\u201d between different locations. Information spots<\/strong> can be activated to bring up a pop-up displaying informational text, images, or even videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The idea is to provide the user a sense of being in the actual place, with the ability to move between locations and to interact with the surroundings to bring up extra information at will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Gesture-based<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      The second approach forgoes the VR equipment in favor of something more natural \u2013 our very own hands. The virtual space is instead displayed on a large screen, while a camera is recording user inputs through body movements and gestures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      For instance, making a swiping motion left with your arm allows panning the current view left or right, while jumping in place allows \u201cjumping\u201d to another location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      While the level of customizability and range of functions available may not be comparable to the VR kit edition, this gesture-based edition is more accessible without specialized equipment (a simple screen and web camera will suffice) and can potentially reach a wider audience (a room of viewers versus a single person wearing goggles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This approach essentially gamifies VSR, with the goal of adding an additional dimension of \u201cfun\u201d to the user experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Browser-based<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        The last approach accesses the VSR through a traditional browser window, using the mouse as navigation by clicking and dragging to pan the view and clicking Navigation or Information spots to access additional information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        As with most software-based technology, we are currently limited by the extent of hardware capabilities. For instance, VR headsets struggle with displaying 360-degree videos above 8K at an acceptable framerate. Even so, Arithmer is tirelessly working towards solutions to ensure that VSR users can view content at the highest resolutions for maximum immersion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        VSR and the future<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        VSR first emerged as an idea during the rise of the most recent pandemic, when travel became limited and tourism experienced a decline. With VSR, organizations were able to continue promoting tourism through virtual tours and factories reported varying levels of success in continuing \u201consite\u201d factory tours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        As technology continues to advance and hardware limitations are progressively being overcome, Arithmer is continually discovering new applications of VSR as virtual reality is increasingly becoming integrated into our daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
